Lovely & Friendly Resort by the beach Apr 10, 2010
Although my stay was just for 1 night, I really had a nice stay. The staff is very friendly and there are several beach activities available for "water babies". Great food as well, with Sigi's Bar & Grill located there. I found it worth every penny.

Golden Sands Resort by Shang Ri-La Dec 27, 2008
I just came back from Penang. I stayed at this resort for 3 nights. The hotel was pretty engaging even if you don't really know what to do in Penang. It is situated about 200m from the shoreline.
The rooms facing the sea is amazing even though we're on the second level. But the hill view rooms aren't that worth it at the second floor or any other floors. The TV has more than sufficient channels for a night watch on the bed. Well, the resort will keep you away from the telly. Everything else in the rooms were more than appreciative! Hangers, ironing board, boiler, hair dryer, mini-fridge...
Between the resort and the shoreline, the resort offers a beautiful, shapely and relaxing swimming area inclusive of a whirlpool (kids to be accompanied by). By the pools, there are tanning seats or just seats for relaxation. If you're a parent, you wouldn't mind leaving your child to play alone in the appropriate pool because they've a lifeguard for 'every' pool.
The bar by the pool serves pretty good and tasty food. The burgers and sandwiches are delectable especially after a good swim. The banana milkshake was the best I've drunk although it is a bit too sugary but I figured it was necessary if you're not going to be out in the pool or out in the sun for very long without food.
The way to the beach is very convenient. It's less than a minute's walk from the resort lobby. The waters are not at all clear. They are not mirky as well. But I wasn't that much into the colour of the water since something else attracted my attention. There were jet skis for rent. You only get 15 minutes on it. The waves get larger in the afternoon onwards. So if you're the thrilling one, try getting on the jet skis at that time.
They offer paragliding as well. That was the first time I tried paragliding. It was an awesome experience. You can see a whole good view from up there. The ride lasted about 10 minutes. It's best paragliding in the morning when the wind is better up above.
They've more than comfortable seats in the resort's restaurant. The buffet was sufficient but staying for more than 4 nights, you'll definitely get bored of the same old breakfast (thing is you wouldn't want to miss it since it's complimentary). They had western and local food the same.
The lunch menu was greatly minimized from the breakfast varieties. And I think it's better to eat out for lunch. The dishes they had to offer for lunch are what you can find in every decent western restaurant. The servings are rather small for a big price especially the caesar salad. I finished the salad within 2 minutes of non-stop chewing and swallowing!
The resort do offer a few other restaurants as well. There is an Italian restaurant but we didn't step inside it because 'it isn't Italy', 'it's Penang' and we didn't go to Penang for Italian food (although it's my favourite cuisine).
The resort's front most desk could call a cab and they would arrive in just a minute of waiting. They hooked us up in a tour van that costs (my mom bargained) RM 50/hour. The desk checks tours for tourists and provides information about the attractions in Penang which was very convenient for us.
Last thing is, you don't have to walk any further because the Night Market is at the doorstep of Golden Sands Resort. It opens every night till 11pm. It has an adequate stretch. They've interesting goods to bargain. Don't be afraid to bring the price at it's lowest possible!!

I really, really loved the 3 nights we spent at the Golden Sands. It's on Batu Feringgi Beach, on the opposite side of the island from the airport. This is where the tsunami hit, but this hotel survived well, and is in good shape.
This is a fantastic homebase to explore the island from. It's not super fancy, but that's not what you want at a beach, where you'll be coming in wet from the ocean and pool, and trailing in sand; you want mid range; a good beach hotel; and this fit the bill perfectly. Comfortable clean beds, good size rooms, great balconies, FANTASTIC restaurants, great service, internet available... I can't say enough.
One word of warning; at a place like this, it's easy to end up not leaving the resort; don't make that mistake!! Make sure to venture out at least a little and see this wonderful island!
