On a Clear and Sunny day... Nov 21, 2009
If your lucky, the fog will have cleared and the sun will be shining down upon you making this bridge look glorious :-D However, the weather in the Bay is notoriously hard to predict and it may be 28C in the City and 12C and raining by the coast lol
Best thing to do is keep an eye on the local weather before you arrive and play it by ear too. Keep your touristing plans flexible and when the sun comes out make a quick escape from the City to the Bridge for a perfect photo op!

Bike to the golden gate Aug 17, 2008
I rode from Daly city BART up John Daly Blvd, North up Skyline and the Great Hwy, down Lincoln Blvd, and down to Fort Point under the Golden Gate, then on to the Embarcadero (Fishermans Warf/Pier 39)

Really great ride, very scenic, and only one tough hill.

Very good way to see the city sights, but mostly stays out of downtown, so it is safe and avoids crowds.

Biking to the Golden Gate Bridge Mar 14, 2008
The Golden Gate Bridge is obviously a must-see attraction in San Francisco. A friend and I decided to bike all the way to the bridge. It was very windy that day and the wind kept pushing me back. When we finally arrived at the Golden Gate Bridge, I was so exhausted that I decided not to bike any further. Unfortunately, it started raining and we biked back as fast as we could. It was a memorable day for sure!

While in San Francisco, a viewing of the Golden Gate Bridge is a must-do obviously. But I recommend a trip at sunrise. We found out what time sunrise would be on the day we were going and we made sure to get up extra early to make the trip by bus. You get the best views at sunrise as there isn't much (if any) fog. We also went later in the day and the views just arent quite the same when the top half of the bridge is covered by fog. Although it's tiring to get out of bed so early it will be worth it, and it's so quiet at that time you miss all the crowds of people and the cars that gather throughout the day.

One of the Worlds best known bridges Jul 18, 2007
Back in the mid 1930s San Francisco built a bridge from the hilly downtown area across the by to the Marin county side. Today it is still the second longest and largest suspension bridge in the United States.
It is one of the most well known bridges in the world and or course an icon for San Francisco.
There is a toll to be paid crossing the bridge from north to south, but it remains free on the north bound lanes.
There are two excellent viewpoints from the south side of the bridge and one on the north side.

Completed back in 1937, the Golden Gate bridge is currently the second longest and largest suspension bridge in the United States. It is also one of the many places that stand out as icons for San Francisco, California. Frequently shrouded in fog there in the bay it is a wonderful sight to see clear and impressive. The bridge remains toll free on the north-bound lanes while the south bound lanes heading into San Francisco pay a minor toll, current $5.00 for automobiles. For best viewpoints, on the south side there are two. The first is right at the southern entrance to the bridge and the second is from Fort Point, which is located at the base area on the southern end. On the northern end is a wonderful vista point at which you can not only see the bridge, but Alcatraz island and get a wonderful view of the San Francisco skyline.

In order to connect the city of S.F. Peninsula to the Marin County at the northern part of California, also playing an important role of US Highway 101 and California State Highway 1. It's the Golden Gate Bridge, a suspension bridge that looks like a gate to the Pacific Ocean from the aerial point of view.

This is one of the greatest landmarks of the 20th Century, and perhaps my favorite of that era. Viewable from so many different places, angles, and distances under a variety of different weather conditions makes the Golden Gate a sight to behold on every visit to SF. The engineering, its size, unique design elements, and symbolism to the city and the to state are exceptional.

If you are going to be in San Francisco, it’s really hard not to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Built during the 1930s it is one of the longest suspension bridges even today. It is well known not only for both its engineering and structural design but also its aesthetic appeal. The bridge is under constant repainting and maintenance with a crew always on the bridge. And since opening the bridge has only been closed five times, and those were all due to very windy conditions where the bridge showed visible movement.

The bridge has six lanes of traffic which can be changed to accommodate traffic needs. Generally four lanes headed into San Francisco in the morning with two lanes in the opposite direction, and just the opposite in the afternoon. There are also pedestrian and bicycle lanes that are only open at certain times and days.

The bridge has seen well over a thousand suicides and although suicide barriers have been discussed over the years similar to those on other high structures engineering, cost, and public opposition have not yet been overcome. Over the last few years there has been a jump about every two weeks.

By all measures this is the most photographed bridge in the world. And whether you get every inch of the towers on a clear day or a shot with fog shrouding the tower’s top you know it was well worth taking the shot.
