Coffee Traditions Apr 19, 2017
Having a cup of coffee with friends or family is a must in Lviv. It has become a cherished tradition and is carefully supported by dozens of coffee houses of the city.

Lviv is proud of Yuriy Kulchitski, who was an officer in the army of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski. Yuriy Kulchitski was born in the village of Kulchitsy Lviv area. After the victory over the Turks in 1672, when the united Polish army defeated the Ottoman Empire near Vienna, he got a trophy as a merited officer: coffee beans and opened the first coffee house in Vienna. The coffee tradition spread all over Europe. Now there is a monument to Yuriy Kulchitski in Vienna.

You can drop in at a coffee house in Lviv called "At Yuriy Kulchitski" and there is a coffee house in Ruthenian Street with the same name as the first coffeehouse of Yuriy Kulchitski in Vienna: "Under the Blue Lamp".

We went to Golden Dukat Restaurant located at 20 Ivan Fiodorov Street two times and had a good time there, although the space is really small at that coffeehouse. The coffeehouse impressed us with its ambiance, red coffee, city panoramas on the walls and the variety of coffee on sale.

We discovered this nice little coffeehouse on our way back from Assumption Cathedral. We saw the "coffee lion" at the entrance and decided to drop in to try some red coffee about which we had read in a guide book.

The coffeehouse is very small and only consists of two halls.

Thank Goodness there was a vacant table and very soon we were enjoying "the only red coffee in Europe"! (UAH10).

We did not order any cakes, although their choice is great.

There were a lot of young people at the coffeehouse.

The ambience is great there!

We enjoyed viewing and taking pictures of the panoramas of then old Lviv.

My English friends Sarah and Sue left their comments in the coffeehouse's guestbook and I provided a translation into Ukrainian.

Here is a nice 3D tour of the coffeehouse for you, fellow travelers : http://zolotyy-dukat.virtual.ua/ua/
