Gokyo is a collection of lodges in the Gokyo Valley located at the base of Gokyo Ri mountain. Trekkers who arrive here usually climb to the top of Gokyo Ri to get a view of Everest and the neighboring peaks. The lodges are located next to the 3rd of six lakes; the 5th and 6th lakes can be reached from Gokyo as a day hike, and there are good views of Cho Oyu from there.
Three main routes lead to and from Gokyo. From Namche, the most traveled path crosses Mong La and the villages of Dole and Machermo. From the Everest area, crossing Cho La leads to the Gokyo valley. Finally, Renjo La pass on the flank of Gokyo Ri leads back to Namche via Thame.
Trekkers coming from Namche need to be careful not to ascend too quickly. At least 4 days are required. Because the valley is steeper than the route to Everest, trekking days are short. People have died from AMS on this route from ascending too fast. It is difficult to descend quickly as returning back to Namche requires climbing back over Mong La.
