a wonderful engineering feat Feb 03, 2017
Gokteik Viaduct is an engineering masterpiece that is between the two towns of Gokteik ad Nawngkhio. It is the highest bridge in Myanmar and when it was built it was the highest trestle in the world. In 1899 work begam in the construction of the bridge and it was completed a year later by the Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction Company. 15 towers support the 10 deck deck truss spans of 37 meters . One train in each direction crosses the viaduct each day

Crossing the viaduct is an experience of a lifetime as the train slows down to 2 or 3 kms an hour as it slowly grinds its way across the gorge while it creaks and squeaks. You can look straight down to the river which is 102 meters below the rails. You can also see some tracks below which i have no idea of their use, perhaps something to do with the maintenance. Eventually the train will reach the other side and the passengers will return to their seats to continue their journey
