Going from Bahia de Caraquez to San Vicente - crossing the Chone River Jul 07, 2009
If you are following the "Ruta del Sol" along the Ecuadorian coast, you will notice that the highway goes interrupted by the Chone River.
Once you arrived to Bahia de Caraquez, you have to take the ferry to cross to the other side, where San Vicente is located.
There's no schedule for the departure of the ferry. They leave regularly, based on how many people and cars they have to transport from one side to the other. But you have to remember the follwing:
normal days: 6:30am - 8:30pm
last ferry Bahia - San Vicente: 8pm
last ferry San Vicente - Bahia: 8:30pm
holidays: 6:30am - 11:30pm
last ferry Bahia - San Vicente: 11pm
last ferry San Vicente - Bahia: 11:30pm
The journey doesn't last long, barely 15min. While you are crossing the bay, you get nice views of Bahia.
They charge a fee every person or car. Don't remember exactly how much, but I think we pay US$3 for the car. They don't charge you before crossing the river, but at the other side.
Car lines for taking the ferry are weird. You should drive backwards in order to move forward, lol. This way you'd be able to leave the ferry easily and quickly once you arrived to the other city.
When we were there, we saw they were starting to work on a bridge that would connect both cities, so this ferry shouldn't exist much longer.
Part of the First time in Ecuador, but definitely not the last one :) travel blog
