Bus, bus, bus, bus, boat... May 14, 2012
This trip is a bit of ordeal for the lack of direct buses. You have to use few buses and a boat ride to get to your destination. There are easier ways to get to the Atitlan, and they include touristic shuttles that cost 2-3 times more than local version of transportation. Trip should last 3 hours and cost around 50Q (7-8$)

From Antigua take bus to Chimaltenango, a little town that doubles as a bus hub on the Pan American highway. There is no station, and you are dropped on one corner and told to go to another and wait for next bus (Price 6Q). From there you are looking for any bus going towards Pajanachel. We got into the bus that covered good chunk of the road to the Los Encuentros intersection towards Atitlan. It cost us 15pp which is a bit high, and probably they took advantage of us.

Next bus takes you to Solola, but you can also find the direct bus to San Pedro if you are a bit lucky. From Solola it is a short ride to Panajachel (both rides are 3Q), where small ferry boats have a dock. Boat ride is 15Q, but you will pay 25Q because you are stranger and they are the only option for fast continuation of your travel. After 40 minutes you’ll be swarmed with local hustlers trying to sell you accommodation and trips around San Pedro.

There is also a way to avoid boat and going trough Panajachel. Do not exit in Los Encuentros and go to the 148km, which is intersection that takes you directly to San Marcos, San Jose and San Pedro. There are buses almost every hour, but do it in the morning because after 2pm there is no bus.
