Goha Hotel Gonder Reviews
Great panoramic view! Dec 25, 2011
Only one night in Gondar, and we had booked the ‘best hotel in town’ as Lonely Planet says. This hotel used to be a state hotel, but since 2008 it is privately owned. The hotel is situated on a hill (a short drive from the city).
The reception area (and lobby) are nicely decorated. A sign promised ‘wifi’, but unfortunately it did not work. From the lobby you pass the restaurant (nicely decorated too) and get to the terrace. The views from the panoramic terrace are magnificent. Besides the stunning views there’s a pool, but, the pool is empty (apparently since a long time).
We were staying in room 222, a spacious room with a small bathroom (sink in the bedroom). For Ethiopian standards fairly clean. Traditional decorated. Provided with a television.
We had a fair dinner in the restaurant. Soup, pasta and cake accompanied by a bottle of white wine and water for about 20 euros for two persons. This was one of the most expensive meals during our round trip Ethiopia! Remember to bring a sweater, you have to walk an open air gangway to get to your room, and at the altitude of Gonder (2210 metres) it can get pretty cool at night!
Breakfast was served at the table and okay.
See www.gohahotel.com for more information. The hotel is part of the Ghion Chain (see www.ghionhotel.com.et). We stayed in a hotel of this chain in Bahir Dar, Tana Hotel, as well, but the hotel in Gondar is much better maintained). Later we would stay in Yeha Hotel, which was the best out of the three hotels from this chain we stayed at.
A note in general about Ethiopian hotels; a twin room has the two regular separate beds. A double room (with a king bed ) is called a single room!
