Easy to Reach - Picturesque Waterfall May 19, 2012
These photogenic falls are directly off of the Ring Road between Myvatn & Akureuyi. They run thru a canyon that can be seen from either side of the river but there is a proper parking lot and info plaque on the west side with a picnic table or two.

There is a foot path that runs along both sides of the river and a footbridge that crosses the canyon just downstream with nice views. There is also a precarious looking metal staircase that leads down to the rocky, water's edge just downstream too, though I didn't try them out.

There's a pretty, yellow restaurant and cafe on the east side just off the road. This site is worth maybe a 15 to 30 minute stop, especially if the weather is good.

Waterfall Of The Gods Jul 04, 2008
Not the most spectacular of the falls in Iceland but worth a look for the basin it has created. On the way back from Husavik we cut back a short distance along the main road, and Godafoss is just off the road.

Decent parking space and an easy, almost flat path to get along to the falls. Prior to going to Iceland we had watched some, pretty horrific, videos of insects at Lake Myvatn, almost like midges in Scotland. While there were none at the lake there were plenty around here, and while a bit annoying, at least they don't bite.

Legend has it that on Iceland turning to Christianity around 1000AD that the king through all the statues of the Norse Gods in here.

You can more or less get right up to the edge of the cliff face to get great shots of the falls and can cross the bridge to get to both sides.

The Goðafoss (Icelandic: waterfall of the gods or waterfall of the goði) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the Mývatn district of North-Central Iceland at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters.

In the year 999 or 1000 the Lawspeaker Þorgeirr Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, Þorgeirr threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. Þorgeirr's story is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók.

A window in the Cathedral of Akureyri (Akureyrarkirkja) illustrates this story.
