Glendalough is just a very small town in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. It is part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Glendalough means 'Glen/Valley of the Two Lakes' in Gaelic. It is located one mile from the neighbouring town of Laragh. There is one road that runs through Glendalough, the R756.
The Glendalough valley was formed during the last ice age when it was carved out by galciers and when they eventually thawed the two lakes were formed - the upper and the lower lake - These lakes are how the geographical area got it's name.
It is a popular tourist destination due to the century-old history of the area. It is an early medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, made up of the iconic round tower, the gateway leading into the graveyard, the cathedral and St. Kevin's Church. There are some picturesque hikes to accomplish while in the area that traverse the mountains surrounding the lakes. There is a local hotel and hostel nearby which cater for the holidayers.
