While I did not make all three waterfalls offered along this trail, I can certainly recommend the jaunt. As long as you packed hiking boots, anyway. The trail-head is literally in town – just turn onto Laurel Lane (red light in the heart of downtown along Main Street) and follow it to the Annie Cannon Garden.

Annie Cannon Memorial Garden is small, but quite inviting and features a reasonable quantity of parking spaces. Beyond visual appeal, there is tiny wooden stage, suggesting summer theater or concerts? It would be a lovely setting for either.

A bulletin board is also staged here, displaying a trail map for Glen Burney, so off I went. The path was wet and mucky, but not ridiculously so. The trail is broad at the beginning, but soon narrows with rocks and tree roots littering the way. Glen Burney earns a “medium” difficulty rating, though there is nothing particularly perilous, just slow going.

The unusual aspect of the trail was encountering several manhole covers, followed by a short, bulky concrete tower reminiscent of sewer works. The first signposted stop on Glen Burney is “The Ruins” and arriving here explained everything. Here was a graveyard of decaying stone walls and concrete structures, documented by signage as the town’s first sewage system!

After enjoying a chuckle over the unglamorous ruins I pressed on to Cascades, the first waterfall (roughly eight-tenths of a mile from the trail-head). These were pleasant enough, but not spectacular by any stretch (i.e., diminutive and gently flowing). It began raining fairly hard here, so I punted on discovering the last two falls. Both were nearly another mile distant, but the pair is heralded as more noteworthy than the Cascades. Given how convenient the trail-head is to the town I would be inclined to go the distance should I ever return and be blessed with better weather.
Park at Annie Cannon Garden to beg…
