Glebe Point YHA Sydney Reviews
Glebe Point YHA in Sydney Jul 02, 2008
Not a bad hostel at all. It’s clean, the rooms are spacious and the staff is helpful. The location is probably the best asset, you can park your car for free 5 minutes round the corner (really hard to find free parking in Sydney centre) and if you have a laptop, Glebe library (10 minutes walk) has free wireless internet for as long as your battery lasts. Also, there’s a shortcut you can take on foot which brings you to Darling Harbour in 20 minutes walk, past the fish market, which is excellent! On the down side, the kitchen and dining area are a bit cramp for the number of guests and the lounge is also on the small size. I'm here in low season and I dread to think what the place is like when they are full in summer.
To get around you can catch the bus, 431 and 434, just outside the hostel. I enquired about tickets at a local shop and they gave me a 10 journey student pass, for $7.20. I’m not a student, but they’re not going to know that unless they ask me, and they didn’t. This is the cheapest way around, 72c per ride (instead of $3).
Just like in Newcastle, here at Glebe they offer casual work to travellers in exchange for free accommodation. It’s a good deal and it’s worth asking if there are any vacancies when you check in. This is the best place if you are planning to stay in Sydney long term. With a YHA membership ($42) you pay $168 weekly (there is also a cheaper rate for 2 weeks stay). More than half the people I have met here have been staying for a long time, some say it’s cheaper and more convenient than renting a flat or share a house. I haven’t investigated this option because I’m only staying for 4 weeks. Also, when you pay weekly you get a ticket for free bbq on Friday night, it’s a good feed.
