Great Historic Turf-Roofed Farmstead May 19, 2012
We unexpectedly came across this wonderfully restored, historic Icelandic, turf-roofed farmstead complex directly off of route #75, 16km's south of Saudarkrokur.

The complex is about 10 turf houses, 2 newer wooden houses from the 19th century and a newer church and cemetary attached beside them. Peeking in the windows, we saw all kinds of 18th & 19th century artifacts and gives a glimpse into how cramped and basic the living conditions were at the time.

There is a Turf Farm Museum on-site, but unfortunately as with many sites in Iceland, it is only open from June to September. Still, just poking around the grounds was a real eureka-moment as we had the place all to ourselves. A real hidden gem in the north of the country!
