Residential status - high, low, high Jul 23, 2010
First, this has nothing to do with W.E. Gladstone, the 19th century Prime Minister of the UK. Second - it's owned by National Trust for Scotland and National Trust (England and Wales) cards are valid,

What it is then is a high tenement building from the 17th century. The part open to the public is on the first floor. The tenements at the top of the Royal Mile are all centred around tight spiral staircases. The roms are staffed by NTS volunteers who are extremely helpful in explaining the social life at the time the tenement was built.

This was the old city of Edinburgh but as the well off moved to the new Georgian city, the status of those living here fell until the tenements became overcrowded slums. This one by bought by the city until it was acquired by the NTS. Any apartments that can nw be rented in the area are really expensive! Such is life.
