Almost a family museum Jul 24, 2010
It's not necessary to have had a grandmother and her parents and siblings all working in the pottery industry in Stoke-upon-Trent - but it does make this museum a bit special for me.

It is now practically the only place in England where the 'bottle ovens,' which covered all the area, can still be seen. There is much technical information about the making of pottery. It is well set because Stoke was the heart of what is called 'The Potteries,' a part of Staffordshire.

There is also considerable information about the dideases that afected workers in the indusry. In doing family history I discovered that my, grandmother, her parents and al her male siblings died young.

There are still thriving pottery works in England but what I vaguely remember from visits in the 40s and 50s as 'The Potteries' are now no more and this is the sole real reminder - never a particularly illustrious factory but like many, many others.
