The historic Gladstone Hotel is a design-head's dream Jun 23, 2011
The Gladstone Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in Toronto, built in 1889. It is a grand, landmark structure built in a beautiful, Romanesque Revival style. With all of its history and classic beauty, its rooms are some of the most modern and stylish in the city. Each room was individually designed by a different designer, creating unique themes for each. Take a look at some of the photos included with this review, and you will see examples of these designs. When making reservations for the hotel, you can even reserve a specific room. My room was designed beautifully. My only issue was that the bathroom was very small, and included a very small, narrow shower that was difficult to maneuver in. However, I would still highly recommend the hotel.

The hotel has both a restaurant and bar off either side of its lobby. The focal feature of the lobby is an old, glass, hand-operated elevator. It is operated by one of the lobby/front desk attendants. As beautiful as the elevator is, you may have to wait for someone to assist you with it. Due to this wait, I found myself mostly taking staircase that wraps around the glass elevator shaft. The hotel is only four stories, so this should not be an issue for most.

The location of the hotel is the Queens Street West neighborhood. This is a trendy, of-the-moment neighborhood that reminds me of the Lower East Side and parts of Brooklyn in NYC. The hotel is located a block from the trendy Drake Hotel, and is close by several well-reviewed restaurants and galleries. One possible downside of the hotel to some is that it is a good 20-30 minutes from Downtown. However, there is a street car stop right outside the hotel that takes you directly into Downtown. I had a great stay here, and highly recommend the Gladstone for your next Toronto visit.

Gladstone Hotel, Toronto - Canada Apr 02, 2010
The Gladstone is a really unique hotel, each room is designed by a different artist with a specified theme. They have an old glass elevator that creates a cool experience, but needs to be operated by hotel personel so can get a bit annoying waiting for someone to help you, but for the most part service was good. Some when out of there way to help you and some didn't. The place was very clean and located on Queen St. witch is a great spot to be. The street car can pick you up right in front of the hotel so its easy to get around. There is a cafe in the hotel and a bar connected to it as well. There is no free breakfast witch was kind of lame considering the price, but it was a nice hotel and in a great location. I stayed in and recommend 405 | Parlour of Twilight| Great room with a huge bed.
