Info on Gladewater, Texas Jul 06, 2017
Gladewater is a decent sized town of about 6700 (up 6% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 80 and 271 just north of Interstate 20 in Gregg County in the Piney Woods Section of Northeast Texas. Gladewater was established in 1872 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was built through the area and the residents of the nearby towns of St. Clair and Point Pleasant moved to the railroad. Gladewater got its name from nearby Glade Creek a water source in a basically barren location. In 1931, oil was discovered here and the population doubled from 500 to 1000 overnight. The population of Gladewater hit 10,000 at the height of the local oil boom. One of the first Texaco oil derricks is preserved on W. Commerce Street. The first bus line in Texas was established in March 1925 between Gladewater and Mount Pleasant. Today Gladewater survives on lumber and agriculture and on tourism coming to the many antique shops here. Lake Gladewater provides water based recreational opportunities. The town has some nice murals and artistic cut outs including Elvis Presley and others. Annual events include the East Texas Gusher Days in April, the Gladewater Roundup in June, and the Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival in September.
