Gyros pittas near the Bazaar Feb 01, 2017
We struggled to find a place to eat near Korce's bazaar during our day trip to the city in March 2012.

Our Macedonian guide, Goran, ruled out several simple places (such as burek stalls) within the bazaar on grounds of poor hygiene. To be fair, we could see his point; they didn't look particularly appealing.

We left the bazaar and strolled along Bulevardi Fan Noli eyeing up the various eating establishments. A restaurant that was simply called "Burek" caught our eye; we crossed the road to take a look and were disappointed to see that the open grill in the window contained just a couple of pitiful looking kebabs.

A short walk along the boulevard and we found a bright looking place with green "Stela" beer parasols outside. Goran spoke to the waiter and ascertained that they didn't sell food, only drinks.

Our next fruitless stop was "Bar Cafe Agjensia". We sat ourselves down at a table by the window in the upstairs dining room, with great views over the boulevard, before finding that they too weren't serving food. However, the waitress pointed out of the window to a small cafe opposite; a place called Gjiro Elva.

We made our way across the road and found a welcoming cafe. The staff spoke some English and were curious about our visit, even more so when they learnt that we were from England.

A spit of meat was cooking behind the counter and, although we didn't see a menu, I don't think it stretched any further than gyros pittas. That was fine by me; I've grown very fond of gyros pittas during my visits to Greece over the years.

We ordered 3 gyros pittas (150 Lek / £0.90 each):

Wafer thin pork shaved off the spit and stuffed into a folded pitta bread along with french fries, onions, ketchup and mustard. We all enjoyed our snacks.

Goran asked the waitress for tap water and she returned with three glasses of complimentary water. We were unsure whether the tap water was safe to drink, so we left it alone.

Tasty gyros pittas close to Korce's bazaar!
