Girdwood, Alaska formally called Glacier City is located about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage on the shores of Turnagain Arm. A one time mining town is now a year round resort town. Girdwood is known for it's skiing at Alyeska Ski resort and for summertime activities like hiking, fishing and even gold can still be found in them hills.
Girdwood has the most northern rain forest in the world. After the 1964 earthquke devastated the area, the town was moved 2 miles away. Girdwood is a short distance from Portage Glacier and Whittier, gateway to Prince William Sound.
