Great budget option, but lacks any character of independent properties Apr 10, 2011
Yet another TATA owned business, Hotel Ginger is a newer concept of clean, modern affordable hotels building around India. Similar to the fast growing 7 days Chinese chain of hotels, their properties are aimed squarely at the burgeoning middle class of India. The difference is noticeable in several ways, good and…well, just different.

Drive into the hotel located a few kms from Haridwar proper and you’ll easily find parking in the Western style paved lot. Don’t expect the usual rush of young Indian male staff to help you with your bags. Instead, find an airport style baggage trolley parked near the front door which can be used all the way to your room once checked in.

The lobby is rather impressive at first glance when compared to most hotels in the same price range. Light colored wood (veneer) mixed with low end tile and harsh bright light quickly give a dormitory feel to new guests. Check-in is handled by young Indian staff dressed in matching bright orange polo shirts, the same color as Ginger’s corporate logo. Don’t expect to bargain on pricing here. The staff will repeatedly point to the room tariffs on the rate cards no matter how much haggling.

Absolutely no food is allowed in the rooms. Instead the staff hard-sells you on their in-house food services conveniently located just off the lobby. If you didn’t already feel like you were in college, wait until you see the cafeteria straight out of any hospital, school or food court.

Elevators are available which usually is not even a consideration for me, however, it comes in handy when you’re on the 3rd or 4th floor here. Rooms carry out the dorm theme. Light wood, tile and white walls give a very clean and sanitary feel in stark contrast to most budget hotels. Every ounce of space is maximized from the small writing desk built into the corner to the built in closet and luggage rack. Oddly enough there is a mini-fridge provided which kind of conflicts with the no food policy in my mind. Beds are simple, white cotton sheets with a pillow. Bathrooms are tight providing just the needed amount of space for a stand up shower. A Western toilet + water heater + full time running water= all I need.

Wireless internet is provided throughout the building for a “small fee”. How small you ask? The service is sold in 15, 30 and 60 minute increments, each one with a separate password. You cannot purchase one password to renew/recharge and you cannot purchase a simple 24 hour pass. Passwords are purchased at the front desk where a predetermined amount of passwords for the day are on hand. If you desire to purchase 4 60 minute time slots but only 2 remain for the day, well you’re just out of luck. At a cost of Rs 57 per hour you quickly see where the hotel is making up for the low room rate. Normally I would just use an internet cafe in town but for the fact I brought my laptop for this trip.

As for the meal service in the lobby…skip this. No, run! The offerings are minimal and bland with little extras to help flavor them into something noteworthy. Plan ahead accordingly as food is somewhat challenging to find on this side of town.

In spite of a negative sounding experience I would have no reservations staying at this or any other Hotel Ginger. Now that I understand their system, I.E. food & internet elsewhere, I know what I can expect in terms of pricing, comfort and cleanliness. Room cost Rs 999 ($22). To keep your budget intact, skip the laundry services: Rs 435 for a few shirts and pants. Find a local laundry wallah instead.

Take a tuk tuk to town but negotiate the price before you jump on. Be prepared to share it with multiple others. STD’s are easier found in town for calling home.
