Chow-dah Hound! Mar 24, 2012
Resting in a dilapidated structure along the Old Port waterfront, Gilbert’s Chowder House blends perfectly with its surroundings. This is serious working fisherman territory, and none of the buildings abutting Gilbert’s look any sturdier. Gilbert’s exudes the atmosphere of hard work at sea, but also the enticing aroma of delicious seafood. To gain a whiff of their delectable clam chowder, I parked my hungry butt and ordered a steaming bowl of their trademark soup and some mussels.

Everything is served in paper plates and paper bowls, which fits perfectly with the work-a-day aura, but not the price tags --> need to alert you prices are a bit salty for the atmosphere (not extravagant, but higher than you’d expect for the lack of elegance), though I will defend the flavor makes the dishes worth every cent. The clam chowder is heaven – thick and creamy with plentiful chunks of meat (how many times have you ordered clam chowder and received a bowl of watery broth with nary a clam to be found?).

The mussels may have been even better. Rich and tasty, you get the shellfish presented with a bowl of butter and broth to dip them in. The broth is a bit of a nuance in presentation and it is the actual broth they steam the critters in - I detected garlic, white wine, olive oil and god knows what else, but it is fantastic! I savored every bite of my return to Maine.

We usually find this joint jammed to the gills, but March is low tide for tourists and there was plenty of elbow room. However, service is always friendly and quick, not polished and professional, perhaps, but just give me my damn chowder! A fond catch up with today’s catch and a strong recommendation if you want to get in touch with Maine food and Maine culture. You will often find locals parked at the bar for a draught and some ‘chow-dah’ here.
