Giggling Tree Yangshuo Reviews
Nice Guesthouse Outside Yangshuo Nov 16, 2009
The Giggling Tree is very pretty. It's visibly bright and beautiful and tucked in a gorgeous setting.
It's in Aishanmen village (six kilometers south of Yangshuo), which is nice because it is tranquil and remote and ideal for a quiet vacation stay. However, when you do need to get into town (which you invariably will) it is either a lengthy hike or a Y30 cab ride. This isn't advertised, and it should be. Y30 each way adds up, and more than a few of us felt they should offer a shuttle service or some sort of compensation - at the very least warn of this beforehand.
Additionally, because you're in such a remote area, you're at their mercy for food. The food is average at best and is quite overpriced.
When it is cold out, there is no heating in the dorms and the showers are lukewarm at best. It's COLD. You will be sleeping in everything you own. The owner told me she had electric blankets but refused to hand them out. (Then why tell us?)
Unfortunately, most details are overlooked, and a few of us got the feeling this place was slacking under its "Our Pick" Lonely Planet rating. They clearly aren't striving for gold stars. That being said, if you are part of a group with money to burn, it's interesting to see how the service dynamic shifts in your favor.
Overall it's a decent place, but it is not a good value. It's far from a bargain, and those traveling on a budget should stay elsewhere.
