The Story of the Giant Sequoia Redwoods Jul 07, 2009
Located at the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park nearly under the shadow of “The Sentinel” redwood tree is the Giant Forest Museum. This is a free museum, opened to the public in 2001. Prior to being the museum this building once served as the only grocery and camping supply market available to campers in Sequoia. Today only four buildings remain of what once was a small city comprised of a lodge, many cabins and tent-cabins, restaurant, gas station and maintenance buildings which had been built from 1915 to 1925. Many of the parking lots are also gone, in an effort to give the area back to nature. Today the museum tells the story of the area and what it takes to grow the largest trees in the world. Several displays and comparisons tell how difficult it is to grow these huge Sequoia Redwoods, many of which are 3,000 years old. There is also a movie that tells of the dangers and friendly effects of fire in the forest. A souvenir and gift area sells books, DVDs, and an assortment of other items. There is a ranger present to answer questions. Parking for the museum is nearby and also serves as a trail head for several hiking trails in the area.

It is highly recommended that you check it out! We were encouraged by the ranger to explore the museum and we were not planning on making a pit stop. We had a small rapport to make a decision. We thought we didn't have anything to lose and if it doesn't appeal to us, we can always leave. Jumping Jeepers, we were amazed! It was so frigging awesome! The trees are gigantic, larger-than-life! The park service had designed a measurement ruler of their average-sized Sequioa Trees in the road, outside the museum. The average width si the size of 2-way road. The height is about 360 feet tall (or was it taller?!)! The measurement gives you an idea of how tall it actually is and imagine climbing it!
