Ghion Hotel Bahir Dar Reviews
Run down, but nice garden Oct 27, 2014
The hotel must have been a top location once...but long time ago.
All rooms are run down, but there are differences in how much run down. Lights not working, no hot water, holes in walls, a lot of mosquitoes. But if you ask they will look for a sollution or try to repair. Most of the times they take the stuff they need from other rooms...
The rooms near the water seem to be better quality then the rooms in the coloured building.
Tthe room prices maybe still acceptable only because of the location. But I was staying there for two nights and was glad to have a nice clean hotel again in the next place. The price was 200 Birr for a two bed room.
The garden is great and a lot of locals come here to work on their laptops. Wifi is working near the restaurant. Breakfast is not tasty, better option is to go across the street to a coffee bar.
For dinner I did not try. The nextdoor is the upmarket hotel Kuriftu (best fish meal I had in Ethiopia), and several options are easy to reach with a short tuk-tuk ride.
The hotel (or guys hanging around at the hotel) arranges tours in Bahir Dar. The tours are good, but it's only transport they offer, no guide. So think about that when you arrange the price. Because its faily easy to find the path a guide is not really nescessary. If you want you can pay a local at the spot they drop you.
I did not see tours on offer to Danakil or other places in Ethiopia. Maybe they skipped that. There were only local tours now.

Nice place to hang out - maybe not to sleep in Apr 18, 2011
Ghion Hotel is definitely a place where to when you are in Bahir dar.
Maybe not for the hotel itself (place where a lot of "Jeep" travelers are coming, pretty expensive for the country even if they've got a special dirty backpacker room which is "cheap" - 100 Birr)
But It's a nice place :
- to hang out for a drink or a meal in the middle of the nice garden
- to organize some trips on the lake, in Danakil Depression or in Omo Valley (the manager of the hotel seems to be a kind of local mafioso with a lot of connection all over Ehtiopia and able to organize quite cheap trip if you negociate well)
- to meet over travelers
