Arriving at the airport was no problem. The airport is small and easy to navigate, the signs are in English, and you can exchange your dollars for cedis. I, along with fellow volunteers that I met on the airplane, met with our program coordinator, Yao. It was relieving to see him …

Kate met up with me in Accra to begin our one week adventure to end our trips there =( We decided to take the STC bus (State Transporation something). Actual coach buses though, so much more comfy and they run on schedules (surprising!). But even more surprising is I ran into my f…

A birthday in Ghana is like a birthday in no other place, at least mine wasn't! Most of the volunteers who had arrived at on the same day as me had left, and there was a new batch here, but they were away on the Cape Coast trip I had been on a few weeks earlier. There were three other people at the…

I've made it Accra! After a treacherous 20 hour trip (down from 30 last year) I'm back in Accra where it's hot, muggy, dirty, smelly and full of probably the friendliest and happiest people on earth! You can't help but step foot off the plane and just go ahhhh. A big sigh of relie…

Elmina, Ghana -› Cape Coast, Ghana -› …
We went to Elmina the first day after we arrived in Ghana and spent a
night there. From what I've seen in Ghana and heard of other countries,
Africa's roads leave a lot to be desired. The current Ghanaian
president, John Kufuor,
has made improving the roads one of his major goals. They were wor…

So, after my companions left I decided to high-tail it to the Ghana-Cote D'ivior border to begin my journey. I started in Larabanga which is a one car town (and the car doesn't work). I waited at the "crossroads" for a ride from 8 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon and not one car passed by…

My 2nd day in Ghana began early. The hotels driver, Edmund, and i were to search for the Mauritanian embassy so as to save me some trouble when (if) i arrived there. After clocking up a few miles we lost heart and took a break-neck spin around Accra with plenty…

Today is my last day in Ghana. I am sad that I wasn't able to keep up with my blog throughout my trip. After I left Accra, I did not have access to the internet that would let me get to this site. Whenever I tried at the local cafe, it sad forbidden. Though, I am planning on writing some entries on…

Ghana -› Bolgatanga, Ghana -› …
For three months I lived in Ghana. I've been teaching English, drama and sports at a primary school in the poor, undeveloped northern part, Bolgatanga. I lived with a local family in a small village without toilet, running water and electriciy. Big adventure. Changes your way of thinking and makes you appreciate life more!

Who knew that America was a 15 minute taxi ride from our apartment in Accra? On Sunday we decided that we couldn't stay in the compound and watch 80,000 movies for the third day in a row. So we went to the Golden Tulip Hotel. Everyone there was an obruni. We laid by the pool in fantastic weather an…

We took a bus tour around the city today. Our guide, Kofi, was sure to point out the Independence Arc and the Football Stadium, both important sites in the city. Our first stop was at the W.E.B. DuBois center. I knew a bit about him but was blown away by the number of books that h…
