Gevangenenpoort Nov 13, 2015
The Gevangenenpoort (Prisoners' Gate) is the only gate preserved from the inner city defense wall. Sometimes it is known as Eeckelpoort (or Eikelpoort). It was erected in 1378 and used as a prison up until 1930. At the windows of the upper floor, you can still see the bars of the former prison cells. The formerly Gothic gatehouse was rebuilt in 1728, giving it today's Classicistic appearance. Today it is used as a restaurant with three guestrooms.
