Getty Villa Reviews

Jan 12, 2008
Like many rich, speculative men in California, J Paul Getty decided to build a very extravagant home that reminded them of some of their favorite influences - in this case it was Italy. These type of men also tend to collect art from said country, and so it just makes sense when they pass to also make these properties available for the public to enjoy.

Entering the Getty Villa is free, but parking is $8 per car. You have to make reservations and print your free tickets online in order to get in, and a variety of tours are available for free (hence the reservations). I love how it's early January and when we went to Malibu today, it was 67 degrees and sunny. You can't beat southern california in terms of weather!

Back to the Getty Villa. It reminds me of a smaller, less elaborate version of Hearst Castle. Beautiful Roman architecture, interesting details in staircases, and pretty gardens. I saw something like 10% of it since I didn't stay very long, but it's quiet, nestled against the hills of Malibu and very classic feeling.

There is also an amazing cafe with fantastic food and service (what in the world?! Museums are supposed to have gross food and non-existant service!) so fear not if you've come with an empty stomach. A gift shop is located right below the cafe.

The Getty Villa in Malibu usta be the Getty museum before they built the big one on the hill overlooking Westwood and Bel Air. When that was done, they remodeled this one and turned it into an ancient art museum, with Roman and Greek exhibits and such.

Howz that? ;o)
