Late end to the day
posted by:

Today was one of those days when you look at the itinerary and discover that nearly everything you had planned to see is closed on Sunday. So we got to save quite a few miles in side trips and just go straight south. But sometimes those strange days bring out the strange things in a trip. We were driving through a quiet little town in southern Georgia and made a turn as my GPS told me to and came across the most haunted house you have ever seem. There were ghosts waving at me from the front ...

The Georgia Aquarium opened it's doors on November 23, 2005 as an absolutely magnificent gift to the residents of the State of Georgia by Bernie and Billi Marcus and The Marcus Foundation (Bernie is co-founder of The Home Depot).   As a gesture of his appreciation to the citizens of Atlanta and the State of Georgia for helping him achieve the growth potential of The Home Depot over the years, Bernie and The Marcus Foundation donated over $250 million to build this facility. At over 6...

We headed out of Beaufort by way of Hwy 170 (Robert Smalls Parkway/Okatie Hwy) which took us over the Broad River.  We then took Hwy 278 westward until we hit I-95.  Why are areas around airports so difficult to navigate?  It took me at least an hour to find our hotel...which aggravated me because I wanted to have as much time possible to see Savannah.  Our accommodations in the Savannah area was the Days Inn Savannah Airport.  The surroundings were not picturesque bu...

After an interesting night with lots of furry visitors we crawled out of bed pretty late. If you call 9 am late. Today we were planning on going to Savannah!!! After a delicious southern breakfast we headed out. Nice change was that neither of us had to drive because Eric (husband of my friend's friend) was driving. Of course we had one of the dogs with us. lol Don't worry! It was a small one. Smaller then some of those cats. hahaha. After a short ride we got to Savannah, a beautiful city wit...

The Okefenokee Swamp is a huge swamp is Southeastern Georgia.  It is home to many animals including thousands of Alligators and hundreds of Black Bears.  The last time I camped here it was freezing cold- about 15 degrees.  Fortunately for this day trip it was in the 60s, and a few animals were out and about, including an owl who must have been confused by daylight savings time.  Anyway, here are some pictures- note the swamp isn't as pretty in the winter as it is in the ot...

Exploring the Atlanta area

I drove to Atlanta to visit my sister and it snowed!  1-2" of snow in Atlanta!  This only happens about once every 5 years.  People in the city were near panic - do we close schools and businesses?  How do we drive in snow?  Being from the Midwest, I find this amusing.   It felt just like home (only it was about 30 degrees warmer here than back home that weekend).  We stopped at a friends's house to enjoy the zip line they have in their yard.  Ba...

Leaving Monday!
posted by:

I decided to set this up so everyone who wanted to could keep up with my travels while avoiding flooding any email boxes. I leave on Monday for the 11 week adventure -- the flight goes out of ATL on Monday at 7:20 and we aren't supposed to get there until 2 days later because of time change, International Date Line, etc.  First stop is Singapore - we are staying at the National University of Singapore which is apparently very centrally located. More when I am actually there! Kris...

Ok first and foremost before I even tell you about our day there I just want to say there is such a thing as southern hospitality!  We arrived in Atlanta at about 3:30 in the afternoon the first thing I asked my husband was to drive to the state capitol building so that I could get a picture.  While there just on the street not even looking "lost" or anything we had three different peole stop and ask, "do you need help finding something?"  WOW!  We obviously looked like to...

My theory on Floridians:  they can do anything in flip-flops!  Just to prove this point, I walked up Stone Mountain in a $2.00 pair of crappy rubber Wal-Mart flip-flops.  What a morning!  We woke up later than expected because Ed, (Brian's and my roomy), set the alarm time but didn't turn it ON...it helps sometimes!  But anywho, it was fine because we all needed the sleep.  Ed and I were a little loopy from l...

Tuesday, August 7th.  I'll lock the doors and head on out of Talking Rock.  The castle still stands, a little cleaner then when I found it, but still needing some TLC.....  and with that I will leave behind 'Red Dash'.  My trusty old red Ford 150 that got me safely down here from Alaska, with the exception of the flat tire at 5am when I needed to catch the ferry in the rain (but hey, it was just a work truck that stepped up to the task).    Next stop, Nashvill...

Outside the Highway 10 loop around Athens, the Garden is run by UGA (the university, not the bulldog!).  The Garden sits in the middle of the UGA Agriculture farms; you pass the porcine, bovine & poultry farms before the entrance.  The Garden is well-situated alongside the Middle Oconee River; the Alice Hand Callaway Visitor Center is in a modern glass-and-steel style and houses a small tropical conservatory, gift shop, and cafe'.  The cafe' offered a nice lunch; I had a CB...

Here we are in Savannah! Got here about an hour ago, and I'm sitting in my hotel room checking e-mail, writing this blog, and watching General Hospital. I NEED to jump in the shower and head over to the theatre, as we are only here one night, but I also need a moment to decompress after the bus ride. Savannah is old and seems pretty beautiful. I hope I get a better feel for that when I take the short little walk to the venue. Tomorrow morning, we hop on the bus again and head to Greenville,...
