Georgetown Overview

Georgetown is a fast growing town of about 7000 (up 48% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 9 and 113 in Sussex County in Southern Delaware. Georgetown was established in 1791 and was named for lead commissioner George Mitchell. Lewes, the first settlement in Delaware was established in 1631 and was the first county seat for Sussex County. In 1791 the county seat was moved to Georgetown because of its more central location in the county. Delaware was a border state during the Civil War so like much of the state the citizens of Georgetown, and even some of the prominent families, had soldiers on both sides of the war. Georgetown has a large community of immigrants from Haiti and Guatemala; workers for Perdue Farms. They celebrate "Return Day" every two years. This is a throwback to colonial days when the citizens would gather to hear the results of the elections. Unlike many towns that have a "courthouse square", Georgetown has a "courthouse circle" containing county and city buildings. The Sussex County Courthouse was completed in 1837 by noted Philadelphia architect William Strickland using the Georgian style of architecture. The courthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Georgetown has a very nice historic district with several buildings of historic and/or architectural significance. There are 20 individual locations in Georgetown listed in the National Register of Historic Places representing a variety of architectural styles.

Georgetown has three notable museums: The Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation; the Marvel Carriage Museum; and the Treasures of the Sea Museum.
