A Castle rising in the Mon Valley May 26, 2012
The George Westinghouse Castle was built in 1896 as the Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building. But it is nothing like any office building you have seen. It is a grand Romanesque Revival chateau in exterior style, but functioned as a company headquarters. Westinghouse provided its Air Brake factory employees with a library, gym, swimming pool, and bowling alley on the first floor. The building was in use as company headquarters and offices until 1985.

Today, the building is operated by Historic Wilmerding and houses the George Westinghouse Museum. The interior has the original marble floors, brass fixtures and oak woodwork throughout. First floor displays include exhibits on George Westinghouse, Westinghouse Company industrial and consumer product development and an exhibit of Depression Glass. Although it began as a company manufacturing railway equipment (which it still does in Wilmerding), Westinghouse branched into electric power, radio, nuclear energy, and consumer appliances. On Saturdays, a model railroad club operates and O-scale train layout. (Based on Wilmerding, of course.)

Admission is free, but tours of the upper floors, including the ornate Boardroom, are $10.

I was the only visitor on a Saturday afternoon. I was too late to take a full tour of the building, but the docent on duty kindly gave me a private tour of the first floor exhibits.

The Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
