In the early footsteps of George Washington Apr 15, 2012
George Washington was born at Pope's Creek farm on February 22, 1732 in Virginia's Northern Neck. His great-grandfather, John Washington, had settled nearby in 1657. Augustine Washington, George's father, acquired the neighboring Pope's Creek land and operated a modest, by Colonial standards, tobacco farm.

The farm had fallen into disuse by the Revolutionary War era. The site became a National Monument in 1930 as interest in Washington's bicentennial grew. At the same time as he supported the restoration of Colonial Williasmburg, John D. Rockefeller purchased land to donate to the National Park Service to form the present National Monument grounds. A Memorial House was constructed along with a Colonial Kitchen outbuilding and Herb Garden. In the 1960s, a demonstration farm was opened.

Today, visitors can see a film and exhibits at the park's visitor center to learn about George Washington's forebears and early life. An interpreted path takes visitors along Pope's Creek to the Memorial House and past the foundation of Washington's family house, outlined in oyster shells. (The real house was more modest than the Memorial House and probably constructed mostly of wood rather than brick.)

Park Rangers offer frequent narrated tours of the grounds, the Memorial House, and the Kitchen. (The only way to visit inside the Memorial House.)

George Washington lived at Pope's Creek until he was almost four years old. A visit to George Washington's Birthplace provides background and perspective to his early years as well as about his family and the agrarian society in which he lived.
