Geologischer Garten Stolzenhagen Reviews
On the trail of the Ice Age ... Oct 12, 2009
An enormously long time ago large regions of Europe were covered with incredible masses of glaciers and snow ... If you're interested in getting to know much more details about this characteristic and formative period you shouldn't miss the Geological Garden (Geologischer Garten), which is located in Stolzenhagen in the northeast of Brandenburg!
A lovely, little and very nicely arranged museum with heaps of particular and comprehensively illustrated information boards about glacial processes, their natural remains and the different types of stones offers a first overall view. These stones can also be viewed while waking along the Nature Stone Trail next to the museum. Almost fifty boulders and a closer description of each stone and its material are laid out there.
Locally found fossils and an open soil profile allow a far-reaching insight in significant geological processes and the development of local soils during the last thousand of years.
The Geological Garden has available reasonable tours to everyone who's interested in very detailed information but it's no problem to take a closer look just by yourself as well.
Besides the region around Stolzenhagen is highly recommended as destination for passionate nature lovers and hobby geologists because the national park 'Unteres Odertal' is dominated by glacial valleys, terminal moraines and boulders - put on the hiking boots and off it goes!
