Huge but friendly hostel May 23, 2011
For me this was my first time staying at a hostel while travelling alone and I was worried I wouldn't meet anyone! When I arrived the place is huge but nevertheless still friendly! Every night there is something going on at the bar and plenty of people to meet! While I was there I ended up doing karaoke with the australians that were travelling through!

Other than the bar there is also a large open space where you can sit on sofas and chill out using wifi. Although I didn't eat there, there is a cafe there. There are various cheap pizza places in the vicinity of the hostel to look at if you go!

The beds are made as soon as people leave and the bathrooms are cleaned regularly so cleanliness isn't an issue here. It isn't that close to the centre but its walking distance to the S Bahn and the bus so its very quick to get there! There are also free walking tours which take you on various different landmarks around Berlin!

I recommend this place!

Only the bare basics Jun 06, 2011
Tis hostel was not the most filthy, but the beds in the room were not only poor quality but had been placed badly. The hostel is not far from a train station and there is also a large supermarket within 10 minutes walk. The showers were among the least practical that I have experienced as a backpacker. There were only shower curtains and nowhere to place your things while you showered. This hostel did however serve a respectable breakfast on the plus side. The bare basics are here in this hostel, but little thought is given to basic comfort and practicality for guests.

Generator Hostel Berlin Jun 03, 2011
We stayed in a 4 person dorm which was a little tight but that lack of space was made up for in communal areas downstairs. The bathrooms are shared in the hallway but they were kept very clean all day.

The hostel bar was great. Dinner was offered every night for a small fee and the food was delicious. Has two billiard tables for a euro and a foosball table. Happy hour at the bar was worth it and the hostel hosts event nights throughout the week. Located around the corner is a train station that will take you to the center of the city in about 15 minutes. It's a little out of the way but Berlin is a sprawling city and public transport is easy to use. The pub crawl is the best I've been on in Europe.

A Very Noisy Hostel Jun 25, 2009
We stayed at Generator Hostel, In Berlin as part of our Contiki tour. It was an ok place for a Hostel. However very noisy.Imagine a giant play school without teachers meets alcohol and your pretty close to imagining a stay in the Generator Hostel. I've been traveling Europe for a couple of months and this was by far the worst place I've stayed. Drunk teenagers lying in reception, Vomit on towels in the bathrooms not picked up in 24 hours, No Privacy, No Sleep - night or day, Paper thin walls, Kids screaming and playing football in the corridors. I really love booze and getting drunk and nights out etc....but I think staying at the zoo would be better.

That how it was , we went in to the nightclub and drinking age in Germany is 15. The club was full of drunken 15 years olds, very loud and yelling.

The room itself was very big and actually clean, With a small bathroom and shower, you easily shower as long you wanted and still have hot water.

We went downstairs for breakfast, which is free! I didn't like the drinks (except for the tea) but the buns were really good :D They also had cornflakes and stuff like that.. You could eat as much as you wanted until 11 o'clock.

Overall not a bad place to stay. I think maybe the drunken teenagers may not always be there.

But who knows. Take your chances.

This place is huge! Definitely the largest hostel I've ever stayed at. Myself, I like a smaller place with a more personal feel. Location isn't great either. Not a lot of things to do in this part of the city, but there's a train station within walking distance in case you want to see more of Berlin.

If meeting other travelers is your thing, you can definitely do it here. When I stayed, it was packed with friendly people from all over, ranging from young to middle aged. They have a nice bar with pool tables and reasonably priced drinks. The bar stays open late so you can sit around and swap travel stories well into the AM!

Generator also has a cafeteria with some tasty, budget friendly food. To me the only downfalls to Generator was the location and size. The size makes it feel more like a resort rather than a quaint hostel.

Big fat savings generator Aug 13, 2009
One of the cheapest hostels I've ever stayed in, crowded but not noisy, maybe not the cleanest, but I imagine that's because they are trying to spend less with maintenance and other stuff to keep the rates down. Breakfast is included in the price, one of the best I've had really, but then again, that's pretty much how it is anywhere in Germany :) ! Best deal for accomodation in Berlin, no doubt about it!

Typical, friendly, backpacker accomodation Apr 26, 2009
This hostel is located outside of the city though it is right by a train stop so its fairly accessible. Its totally fine for sightseeing as you can just get the train in and out in the morning and evening but for going out at night its a bit of a mission. The hostel organises pubcrawls, which I would definately reccommend as a way of experiencing the nightlife cheaply and meeting new people as the hostel is huge so can be quite impersonal. Breakfast is included, staff are really friendly and helpful and the generator bar organises karaoke and events.

Pretty awesome :D

Youth Hostel in Berlin Jul 07, 2008
I stayed 5 nights in this hostel during my week to Berlin in 2003 with college... The hostel is in good condition, it has a bar and internet where you have to pay for... The breakfast is included in the price.

Located in eastern Berlin, this hostel looks like a monolithic communist-era concrete structure with a too-blue coat of fresh paint. Inside, it's literally a small city. There is a cafeteria serving slop and gruel, an internet cafe, multiple laundry rooms, and a bar/club. Picture a giant self-contained international college dormitory and you basically know what this place feels like. The rooms themselves have flimsy beds, cheap metal lockers that easily bend when slammed into, and a tiny bathroom that looks like one you might find on a small airplane made of legos. For what it is (a giant international college dormitory), it does its job well, but most people might prefer a smaller, friendlier place with more character.
The imposing facade.

I stayed 5 nights in this hostel in 2003, as far as I can remember the hostel is okay for a cheap stay in Berlin and you can easily travel by tram to where you want... The beds were not bad though!
