General tips on Skagway Sep 11, 2009
Skagua, as it was know by the local Tlingit means “windy place”, and it did live up to its name the day we visited, although the rain stopped for a little while which gave us a chance to disembark our cruise ship and make our way into the downtown area. This town which has a population of around 1,000 is visited by nearly a half million visitors during the summer season, due to the many cruise ships that dock here. The main draw to this town is the narrow gauge rail road, The White Pass and Yukon Route, which now only does business during the summer season for the tourist industry. Most of the businesses here are also seasonal, and you can easily tell which ones they are. The locally owned stores have a nice little sign in their front window that shows they are owned and operated by 3rd and 4th generation Alaskans.
