Nice beach city but a tad expensive Apr 01, 2013
General tips

- change money at the airport, it's a little bit better than in the city/hotel

- the beach is nice but a bit rocky, bring your reef shoes

- pastry/bread and seafood are more value for money than meat dishes in general

- you only need a day/2 max in Noumea, go to the islands for day trips, the locals said Isle of Pines is very nice

- Amedee is still nice but so so

- bring your friends' address to Amedee, you can send postcards from there, it's the world's smallest post office

- the sun is quite harsh, you need lots of sunscreen

- taxis are not driving around, you need hotel/restaurant to call them for you, even so sometimes they dont turn up

- bus to downtown is convenient and cheap, or you can walk but if you have the time

- no tips required for dining out

I stayed in NC for 5 nights 4 days and unfortunately due to bad planning, spent most of the time in Noumea.

I took a day trip to Amedee Island and that was nice but not sure if it's worth $160 pp. I did the same thing in Cancun and it was around half or 2/3 of the price.

The country has really nice weather when we were here, it did rain a little bit at night on our first night but after that was sunshine all the way, the sun can be quite harsh.

All in all, it has beautiful beaches, very clean city, is a good place to chill out on the beach all day but then again, nothing that Sydney or Caribbean cant offer, except here comes with a more expensive price tag. Having said that they have good seafood here, I had a big crab as part of a seafood buffet at the restaurant and that was quite nice, so perhaps seafood is a little cheaper here compared to meat. I believe they might have to import most things to the country. Bread and pastry are quite cheap too.

It's probably a good place to get your Tahitian pearls though, they're very nice and my guess would be they're a little cheaper here (than in Sydney, for example).

I might go back as part of a cruise to other Pacific Islands and perhaps will visit Isle of Pines, but will not stay in Noumea.
