The GPO is now a heritage building Feb 01, 2017
You will find Yangon's General Post Office a little north of the Strand hotel on Strand Road, and it is well worth popping in to take a quick look. It has a tiled floor, high ceiling and not so many customers. As you enter you can but postcards of Yangon and a counter on the left. Stamps on first day covers are also on display but i am not sure if they are for sale. As of last year it received a plaque indicating that it is now protected as a Heritage Building. It is a beautiful red bricked building with rows of Lancet-arched windows, the beaux-arts portico and double-winged stairways in the foyer the building are worth looking at. The postal service was a small business back in 1854 when a smaller building occupied the site. In 1930 the building was destroyed by an earthquake so the British government bought the lot and built the present day structure in 1936. This is one of the few Heritage buildings that tourists can enter. Notice the Commemorative Plaque on the wall as you enter.
