Going up from new to old Aug 31, 2005
Relatives of us spent their Summerdays at a campsite in the Noordoostpolder, the oldest one of Flevoland, where the villages have the names of the historic sites. The dikes of this polder were closed in 1940, and the land was considered to be sufficiently drained in September 1942. Our family payed them a visit and they took us for a boat-trip to Vollenhove.

We had to pass the lock at Kraggenburg, named the Voorstersluis, and I thought this was very exciting. This lock was built in the years 1939-1941. It is a very big rise, how much depends on the waterlevel in the Vollenhover canal at the "old land", at times the difference between levels can be up to 7 meter, however when we had to pass it was "just" 4,3 meters the lockmaster told me. This lock is of particular interest because it marks the very early beginning of the Noordoostpolder, a 460 km2 big piece of land, reclaimed of the sea.

So we entered the lock, the doors closed behind us, and the water was pumped in. It came in at high speed, so I had to be very quick taking pictures. When we were on the old land level the big doors in front of us opened and we could continue our journey to Vollenhove.
