Disappointing? Dec 04, 2010
Please don't look at the website yet, until I have told you the story of Gelert, the faithful hound.

LLywelyn, one of the great Welsh princes was given a hound by (bad) King John of England. It was given the run of the house. One day it remained at home while LLywelyn was hunting. (WHY? -pass!) When Llywelyn got home, he met Gelert dripping with blood around his mouth. Shocked by the belief that the hound had killed his baby son, Llywelyn slew Gelert. He then found his bay son alive and a dead wolf beside it. In his grief for what he had done, Llywellyn built a fine tomb for Gelert and buried him with honour.

Now look at the website if you like and you will find that there is absolutely no evidence for the story! Both it and the 'grave' were apparently meant to encourage tourism in the late 18th century.

Anyway it's an atrractive village on a spectacular road and will shortly regain its railway (Caernarfon to Porthmadog.) It does not depend on a mound to a mythical dog for me to recommend it. However I confess to having believed the story for much of my life.
