In case you're interested in more recent history then this is a *must* for you. The former regional headquarters and jail of the East German secret service "Stasi" in Dresden is originally preserved and was turned into a memorial site and museum. You can see offices of the Stasi as well as the jail cells. Exhibits are in German only, but tours in English are available upon request in advance.

More than 12,000 people were interrogated and arrested for political reasons in this jail until 1989. During the East German revolution in 1989 the Stasi started to get rid of the files/papers (burned them) but on 5 Dec the Dresdners forced their way into the complex, occupied it and stopped the file destruction.

Particularly moving and shocking is the so called "Fuchsbau" (fox-hole), accessible from the jailhouse through a long tunnel, where the Soviet secret service NKWD arrested the suspects after 1945.

Open: daily 10-18 h

Admission fee: 4 Euro, free last Sunday every month.

Kids up to 18 years free. Photography free.

Free on 5 Dec every year (see above).
