Must see Feb 08, 2013
Arguably serving as the city’s top attraction and landmark, the gateway was constructed in 1911 in honour of King George V and Queen Mary, who were visiting during the British raj. Ironically, the symbol of imperialism was also used to mark the end of the raj too – the last troops used the gateway as an exit point in 1948.

The intricate stonework has Hindu and Islamic influences, and looks particularly stunning during sunset. I like this site because of its historic and touristic atmosphere. Many tourists flock here for pictures and plenty of locals come here as a short outing. There are plenty of opportunities to get your picture taken, people watch, have snacks or enjoy the views of the splendid Taj Mahal Hotel which is opposite.

If you are in Mumbai, this place is a must!

A very good point Andy! The architect was British, so the European influence is bound to come through!

Quite a blending of East and West as there is something of the Roman triumphal arch in the design, too.

So many people! Jun 28, 2013
Went there: October 2012

If you're not afraid of massive crowd, then you should enjoy the Gateway to India !

Rather easy to find, all you have to do is follow the massive influx of people walking towards the waterfrond... then boom, it's there!

Mumbai is a very crowded city, and as this attraction is free, then travelers & tourists of all kind jump on that occasion to stroll on the Arabian Sea-side, hoping to catch a glimpse of wind and to escape for a split-second the heat of Mumbai/Bombay. Also, a great opportunity to have a look at the nearby and beautiful Taj Mahal Hotel and have a thought for those who died in the terrorists attacks of

The architecture of the monument is beautiful and incredibly well preserved, considering it's already nearly 100 years old !

Don't be surprised or offended if locals snap shots of you, with or without your consent... happened to my friend & I about 50 times in half an hour, haha!
