Gateway Restaurant & Lodge Three Rivers Reviews
Only a few good tables to view the river or hear the music Apr 20, 2009
The Three Rivers Jazzfest ended on Sunday with our favorite group playing at this restaurant from 5 pm until closing. There were several guests joining them from the weekend’s festivities. So it was worth the drive to go and try it out. This place is just outside the entrance to Sequoia National Park although it is still considered Three Rivers, and is located just over the Sleepy Hollow Bridge that crosses the Kaweah River. The Lodge is made up of 5 rooms, one small Honeymoon cabin, and one two bedroom house, all of which are probably 75 years old.
The restaurant is a very upscale bar and eatery with a fairly small outside deck that almost hangs over the roaring river below, and two or three inside rooms which have large windows to see the river or the forest beyond. The jazz group was set up at one end of the outdoor deck area. The tables are set with wine and water glasses, linen napkins, and table clothes. The menu is loaded with upscale items that are described with such flair that you’d expect something extra special. What you get is very ordinary with a small leaf of greens and a half strawberry to fancy it up. The food is expensive to say the least, fair sized portions, but nothing special by any means.
That evening, due to the event, they were very busy and the staff had a difficult time handling the crowd. Service was extremely slow, and drink service to refill or reorder was near non-existent.
I am giving a rating based not on the service but on the food, ambiance and overall treatment.
