Motel at the Viking city Dec 29, 2016
First of all, the location of this motel is nowhere and not much to see in the city or town as it was really small with population of 6000 people. We choose this special city as my best friend is from Denmark and as he has the proud “Viking blood”, so he wants to see the town which was founded by the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish settler on the 15 October 1872, and it was called little Denmark in New Zealand and therefore we ended up here. However, it does not look or feel like Denmark.

It was a very long drive from Bleinhem(where we were) since we had to take a ferry to cross to the North Island and the ferry was delay, and we have to ring the motel owner to let us in, as the motel is closed at 9pm. The owner said he will leave the key with a room number in the mail box so we can go into the room if we arrive after 9pm, as the room was pre paid when we booked it through the internet the night before.

Luckily we arrived exactly at 9pm and the owner was still there and waiting for us. He was really nice and we have a long chat with him. He was originally from Switzerland and moved to New Zealand with his Philippine wife in 1992. There is only one other guest in the motel.

After we get the room key, we park the car in front of our room unit and unload our belonging. It cost NZ$100 per night for 2 people without breakfast, and no breakfast offer in the motel as there is no restaurant in the motel, so it is impossible to find something to eat and the town was closed for the night. Luckily we had our dinner on the way here, otherwise we will be starving.

The room was okay, however it was a bit strange as the furniture put on the strange position zig zag in the middle of the room. The big double mattress was pretty good and comfortable and the dining table was handy to have breakfast in the morning. The two seater sofa was good to relax and watching tv before we go to sleep.

There is a refrigerator, free tea and coffee with water boiler and microwave, but no cooking equipment in the room, so definitely no cooking here.

The bathroom was very small and it has a strange shower cubicle where the top of the cubicle was closed by the glass – so it looks like a tube, and if you are over 2 meter high, you will have to sit down to have shower. The water pressure was good with hot and warm water working well, however there is no ventilation in the bathroom, so after shower everything was foggy and the bathroom was smell mouldy. There is one small window in the bathroom we can open, but we can not let it open the whole night just in case someone broke into the room.

Overall, it was okay stay as the bed was comfortable and the place was dead quite at night time even though it was located right at the main road.
