Garden Village Guesthouse Jul 08, 2013
Garden Village used to be one of the centers for the backpacker community that was coming to Siam Reap. Now days there are many hostels and great quality cheep lodging places all over the town, but garden village is still there and going strong.

Hostel is located in back streets behind the “night market” area. There are few buildings in the complex obviously showing that there is lots of business in offering rooms. Whole range of prices corresponds to the size and quality of the place where you will sleep. You can take the cheapest, one dollar bed in the hallway and covered with mosquito net, or you can go for specious room with bathroom and total privacy. I paid 6$ for the whole room with bathroom and all necessities. It was not one of the “luxurious” options that had AC and it was on the first floor, but I hate AC and fan is more than enough for my needs. I was located in the newer building right across the volleyball court that they have. Entrance to my room was behind the building and it did not have much light during the night, but I did not feel uncomfortable or had any issues with the security. Restroom is large and has only cold water. You can pay a bit more for the room with hot water shower but there is no need for it in this weather.

As far as I understood, this place is run by large family, which also lives on the premises, in the smaller building next to the weird concrete pool. When I saw that pool first, I thought that we can swim a bit, but that place is not made for swimming, or if it was made for swimming it must be long, long, long time ago. Now it is full of frogs and dirty water.

One of the biggest assets of this place is whole floor left for chill out, bar, fun, restaurant, games… Internet is available and most of the people staying in hostel spend their sunset and evenings time here. There is another floor above the restaurant, full of chairs, perfect for every kind of socializing. Food that is served in the restaurant is excellent and good size. Owners developed little cable cart that is bringing food from the kitchen on the bottom floor. I almost cut myself in the web of the wires that serve this cart but it serves well and it is interesting to see.

Staff is a bit confused about the things and they are not that efficient which is strange for the place that is so busy. Next to the reception there is bunch of lockers where you can leave your valuables and feel secure about them. This area constantly has security and receptionist so it is the safest place in the hostel. You can get good information about the town and Angor Wat from the staff. They also have transportation options and act like tourist agency. Prices are on the lower side of the scale and transportation is well organized.

I liked this place, and would go back here next time I am around.
