Fantastic stay in Oporto Nov 08, 2016
Garden House Hostel is behind the hidden door on one of the walking streets of Oporto or as the English call it – Porto. Really cool area of the city, with the street covered in small white and black cobble stones and designed into swirls and geometrical patterns. Tiled facades of the old and newer buildings are sometimes very extensive (especially on some churches) and they have stories pictured usually with baby blues on the light tiles. Very easy to understand why Portuguese tiles were, and still are famous.

Entrance to the hostel does not give the justice to the space that opens after a short hallway. Inside it is gorgeous Mansion with fantastic staircase and two floors of spacious rooms. Totally renovated space in the best of taste, with lots of elements just enhanced and necessary parts modernized (such as bathrooms, kitchen, back yard…). Beautiful renovated staircase leads to the first floor pathway, and it is edged with wooden pegs, really cool and unique.

When I felt the place, I prolonged my stay for another day. On the bottom floor there is reception that opens the front door. You ring, they run. Bottom is very spacious and features great living room with super comfy seats and sofas. TV is also there but no one watches it. Whole wall is in the glass door and you have view of the great back yard with the small fish pool. Kitchen is also there, and this is the place where you can make anything you like (it is well equipped) and also this is where breakfast is served. Breakfast is included in the price and it is standard breads and spreads, and also cheese and tomatoes. Coffee and different juices, cereals and assorted milk are also available.

I really had great conversations in this hostel. That living room is incredibly inviting and interesting people were luckily around. There was also a marathon in town so non-runners were teasing the athletes with loads of good vine and promise to cheer during the running laps…

My dorm had excellent beds, with locker implemented as a drawer under the bed. Very spacious locker, but they have super weird key that is kind of hard to handle. Your door is opened with the card, and that is another cool thing about the modernization. Each floor has a large bathroom, very spacious, with multiple stalls for toilet and even more for showers. Bunch of sinks and long wall mirror helps with bottle-neck morning or evening crowding, and both bathrooms had a scale!

There are also private rooms in the smaller building outside, but I did not check them.

Hostel is close to everything. Few blocks from the tram station (important for airport), and close to the train station. Main market is just block away and there is so much more to see anywhere you go in this town. I went away with the bus, and that station is 8 blocks away.

I will also recommend this place for the warmth and fantastic staff.
