The end of 12 generations of wonton sellers Sep 22, 2017
N29°42'38.6" E118°18'00.5" (WGS-84) In an alley off the Old Street, opposite 120 Lao Jie, this Lonely Planet must-visit restaurant is still hard to find. In the little alley, you will pass this restaurant easily. The photo of the wonton seller with food cart on his shoulder suddenly reminds you of the photo at the entry of the alley.

Alarms went off when we stepped inside this “restaurant”, looking like a stable with four tables and stools under fluorescent light. A Chinese family eating wontons at a table made us realise that it was an actually restaurant. A woman inside the restaurant in front of the guests does cooking. Toilet role as napkins on the table. How could this "restaurant" be a Lonely Planet must-visit place?

On the positive side, the woman showed an old Lonely Planet review on her smartphone, the menu was in English and photos on the wall of groups of Western visitors. Confirmation that we were in the “right” place. Amazed by what we saw, we ordered in August 2017 stone pressure baked pie with vegetables for RMB5 and wontons for RMB10. The stone pressure baked pie was too salty, but the wontons of super-thin skin were very good of taste and texture. Not ordered, we were offered small pancakes with prunes, which tasted nice.

Looking at the huge photo of a wonton seller carrying a food cart, we pointed at the man. The woman showed a wedding photo of her and the wonton seller on her smartphone. Suddenly we discovered that the food cart on the photo is now inside. We realised that this “restaurant” is no more than an ancient food cart inside an even more ancient Qing-dynasty home, run by the 12th generation of wonton sellers. No 13th generation is ready to carry the food cart on his shoulder through the streets of Tunxi and selling their specialty wontons. At the same time, we got the sad feeling that this dynasty of wonton sellers had ended.
