Gantry Plaza State Park Long Island City Reviews
A fantastic view of Manhattan Apr 02, 2010
By pure coincidence we stumbled into Gantry Plaza State Park after our visit to the P.S.1. From the place we had our lunch we could see that there would be a fantastic with of Manhattan from the waterfront so we decided that it would be a place that we would head for after the museum. The park is situated next to the East River in the Hunter's Point section of Long Island City.
The 4.0 ha park was opened in May 1998 and got further expanded in July 2009, when it is finished it will be 4 times bigger.
The southern portion of the park is a former dock facility and includes restored gantry cranes built in the 1920s to load and unload rail car floats. I have always loved when they preserve these old working cranes. They have done the same in Copenhagen and I think it is totally cool.
The northern portion of Gantry Plaza State Park was a former Pepsi bottling plant and the big sign is still there facing Manhattan and all the boats on the water.
The park offers picnic tables, a playground, fishing pier, playing fields and a waterfront promenade with a view of United Nations Headquarters and the midtown Manhattan skyline.
