This tunnel was constructed between 1795 and 1801 and is 511m in length. The boats had to be physically guided by boaters who would lie and their back and walk along the tunnel's ceiling or wall to propel them.

The tunnel doesn't have a tow path so we had to be diverted from the canal and followed signs for the Western portal of the tunnel in order to rejoin the path. The diversion isn't too long and the directions are well signposted. We can across an interesting sculpture (see photo).
