Drive to the west coast to the Gannet Colony. I did student teaching abroad in Auckland and the 2nd day I arrived my teacher drove me out to the Gannet Colony after school.
We made it there just at sunset to look over the cliffs down at the black sand beach. This was the first of May and about 30 surfers were surfing down below. We walked down the rocky edge to the beautiful black sand beach below. There are a few local surfer shops on the drive to Muriwai to stop for fish'n'chups. http://www.arc.govt.nz/albany/main/parks/our%2Dparks/parks%2Din%2Dthe%2Dregion/muriwai/
