A totally awesome lodging option in the south of Reunion. This private guest house offers a wild choice of room themes representing the major ethnic groups on the island – I selected the Madagascar room, but the other options include Arabian, Indian, Creole or Chinese. Rooms are creatively decorated and include en suite bathrooms.

And the fun doesn’t stop with the rooms. Downstairs (all the guest rooms are on the second floor) is a common room equipped with a PC, bookshelf and a large screen capable of playing DVD’s from an extensive collection in the room. In back of the house is an open air kitchen, equipped with everything you need to prepare lunch or dinner (refrigerator is here too so you can store provisions you’ve purchased).

Perhaps the best part is the personal touch offered by your hosts, Claus and Christina. Originally from Germany, both speak English and that was one of my motivations for booking here. They seem to have virtual jobs and the hotel gig is supplemental income – I was tickled their “office” is a space like a garage without any door. Nothing short of amazing that they work in a place where one wall is open to the environment, meaning their PC’s are practically sitting outdoors (which is remarkable from a weather perspective AND a safety perspective!).

Of course they aren’t the sole hosts. You will also be greeted by their dogs, Gandalf and Eowyn. This pair will be barking and climb all over you, so it is probably best that you are okay with dogs. They are perfectly harmless, and since they are better behaved and not as big as my own dog, I felt right at home.

The back area is lovely, and breakfast is included in the room rate. The bountiful breakfast offering makes waking up a treat – beautifully presented and such a wonderful array of fruits! Beyond the basics, you can rely upon Claus and Christina to assist you with arranging hikes, etc. There is a fee, but well worth it. An excellent place to kick back as well as stage grander adventures on Reunion!

Location is a final bonus. Gandalf sits on Boulevard de l’Ocean, a wonderful lane running along the shore which is ideal for taking a stroll. If you’d like to score dinner during your evening stroll a restaurant is immediately next door to Gandalf, and right next to that is a small convenience store – the world at your finger tips.
