A wonderful Baroque palace. Mar 01, 2017
Palazzo Leoni - Montanari should be the only Baroque palace in Vicenza. Its construction was started in 1678. It was completed in the first half of the XVIII century. This palace was commissioned by Giovanni Leoni Montanari on the site of some buildings used as workshop and dwelling. Giovanni L. Montanari belonged to a family that produced and sold wool and silk. In 1808 the palace was acquired by count Girolamo Egidio di Velo. It was property of some banks from the 1900. Today the bank Intesa Sanpaolo owns it and uses it as a museum.

Palazzo Leoni - Montanari houses an interesting collection of paintings by painters from the Veneto region. These date to 1700. On the top floor of this palace you can see a large collection of Russian icons; from the XIII to the XIX century.

I think this palace is worth a visit not only for the paintings and for the icons, but for its statues, frescoes and stuccos

Nice Russian paintings Apr 06, 2011
While the building was once a palace, the interior now functions as an art gallery for visitors. The paintings are spread over a couple of floors and are well worth a good look. The ones that I particularly liked were ones from the Russian orthodox faith. Religious paintings were often covered with semi precious metal work. For example, you would see a painted picture of Madonna and Christ. But on top of the canvas would be a metal frame almost, which gave the figures a halo or some of their clothing and forth. It was a great and unique combination. The rest of the art is fairly standard stuff for a museum. Overall, a very nice visit and I’m glad I came here.
